Reading and interest levels in Destiny

Destiny Library Manager and Destiny Media Manager contain features to help patrons locate materials that are appropriate for their reading level, interest level, or both.

For Destiny to locate and display a list of those materials, the title record must contain the correct information in the correct field (tag).

This document briefly describes the cataloging requirements; Destiny's indexing of the tags; and the searching options.

Cataloging reading and interest levels in the MARC record

The Target Audience Note (521 tag) in the MARC 21 bibliographic record contains information about reading and interest levels.

Subfield a contains the target audience.

Subfield b contains the name of the agency assigning the target audience level. If the target audience level is assigned locally, the name of your library should appear in subfield b.

Because the 521 tag is a repeatable tag, you can add several of them to a title record. Library Search has limiters for Reading Level, Interest Level, Lexile Measure, and Fountas and Pinnell Level. Media Search has limiters for Reading Level and Interest Level. You can add information to your title records that support any, or all, of these limiters.

When you add tags for each of these limiters, please keep in mind that Destiny adds only one tag (the first one it finds) to each limiter's index. That is, Destiny adds one Reading Grade Level, one Interest Grade Level, one Lexile Measure, and one Fountas & Pinnell Level. Search results will include a record only if the first tag/first-indicator combination is within the limits set by the patron. For example, if a record has the following tags:

Because the information is cataloged in the second tag of its type, these searches will not retrieve the record:

Reading Level From 4 to 5

Interest Level From 5 to 6

Reading Programs LexileLexile Measure From 400 to 500

Reading Programs Fountas & Pinnell From L to N

All of the information, however, appears on the Search Results and Title Details pages. In addition, a keyword search can locate any of it.

Decide what type of reading or interest level that you will be putting in the tag, and set the first indicator accordingly. Then enter the value in subfield a. The following table outlines some of the possible indicator and value combinations.

Required information

The following contents in a 521 field meet the requirements of a grade level limiter in Destiny Library Manager. (Values in BLUE are the actual data values.)

Reading Grade Level

Required elements

First indicator = “0” – Reading grade level

(Second indicator = blank, undefined)

Subfield a = Target audience note

This subfield can contain any value between 0.1 and 20.0.

Enter the reading grade level as a decimal number (for example, 1.9, 6.5). The whole number represents the grade and the decimal represents the month within the grade for which the title is appropriate.

Interest Grade Level

Required elements

First indicator = “2” – Interest grade level

(Second indicator = blank, undefined)

Subfield a = Target audience note

In Destiny, this subfield must contain one of the following:

Preschool
K-3
3-6
All Juvenile
5-8
7-10
All Secondary
All Grades
Young Adult
Adult
Professional

In Basic and Power Search, the Interest Level selection list contains: Unlimited, Preschool, K, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 10, 11, 12, Young Adult, Adult, and Professional.

Even though the list does not contain "All Juvenile", "All Secondary", or "All Grades", the search returns all relevant records. For example, if a patron selects "4" to "6", the search results include titles cataloged with "3-6", "5-8", and "All Juvenile".

Fountas & Pinnell levels

Required elements

First indicator = “8” – No display constant generated

(Second indicator = blank, undefined)

Subfield a = Target audience note

You may use either uppercase or lowercase letters.

This subfield must include the level: Any letter from A to Z, WB, or LB.

If not included in subfield b, subfield a may include a Fountas & Pinnell identifier before the level:

Important: Make sure you set the first indicator to 8. Otherwise, the record does not appear in a Fountas and Pinnell search results list. In addition, an Alliance Plus autorecon may update a 521 tag with an indicator of 0 or 2, but skips 521 tags with an 8.

Lexile Measures

Required elements

First indicator = “8” – No display constant generated

(Second indicator = blank, undefined)

Subfield a = Target audience note

This subfield can include up to a four-digit Lexile value, one of the following two letter prefixes, or both (e.g. AD 200).

AD - Adult-directed Text
BR - Beginning Reading
GN - Graphic Novel
HL - High Low
IG - Illustrated Glossary
NC - Non-conforming Text
NP - Non-prose Text

Subfield b = Source

This subfield must contain the word Lexile for the record to be found during a Lexile search.

Important: Make sure you set the indicator to 8. Otherwise, the Lexile measure does not appear in a Lexile Search results list. In addition, an Alliance Plus autorecon may update a 521 tag with an indicator of 0 or 2, but skips one with an 8.

Limiting searches by reading and interest levels

There are three ways you and your patrons can search for items in your collection that belong to a reading or study program:

Follett Software Company's Reading Program Service can add the 521 tag information to the applicable records in your MARC database if you participate in the Lexile or Fountas & Pinnell program. MARC records that you retrieve from Alliance Plus Online generally contain reading and interest levels.
